How Free is the Internet really?

I know it’s a slightly old topic now, the whole big brother scenario, but as Google takes over more and more of our online experience is the web turning into a police state?

It was based on open protocols and a free for all philosophy but how can it be free when one single organisation has such a profound effect on the way we view the world. Google determines if our customers find us, and what they think of us. We are at Google’s mercy in every way. Many people I know don’t even use the location bar, they put the web address in the Google box and click through from there to find the site they were looking for, so if Google decides to badmouth us what can we do about it!?

Is it fair to blame an organisation for being successful? Well the courts were quick to stop Microsoft in it’s tracks a few years ago and I think the time has come to adopt a similar approach to Google and it’s scarily vast empire before it takes control of all our lives for good!
